Two-seater, twin-engine fighter-interceptor, the first flight of the prototype took place in 1986. The aircraft was mass-produced from 1987 to 1989. A total of 100 modernized units were produced (MiG-31DZ is an upgraded version of the MiG-31).

The fighter-interceptor differs from its predecessor by the presence of an in-flight refueling system and a new radio-technical long-range navigation system (RSDN). All combatant MiG-31DZ will be upgraded to the level of the MiG-31BM.

The MiG-31DZ fighter-interceptor is in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces as well as the Kazakh Air Force.

Power Plant: D-30F6 is two-shaft, two-spool engine with mixed afterburner chamber for both inner and outer flow and with regulable exhaust nozzle. Module of the engine: inlet guide vanes, 5-stage low pressure compressor, 10-stage high pressure compressor, tube-annular combustion chamber with 12 burners, high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine, mixer case, afterburner, jet nozzle, unit of a forward and back accessory box assembly.

Fuel system: The fuel system includes seven fuselage and two in each plane of the wing (console) and two tanks in the tail unit (vertical stabilizzer) with a total capacity of 15.500 kg.

In addition, it can carry under the wing two external fuel tanks of 2.140 kg each © Konstantinos Panitsidis

In practice, tanks were practically not used, because if the tanks were not dropped after running out of fuel, the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft deteriorated, which affected the flight range and the increase turned out to be only 300 km. The in-flight refueling system allows you to refuel not only internal tanks, but also external fuel tanks.

Weapons control system (equipment): SBI Zaslon radar for electronic scanning with the capability of simultaneous of up to 10 targets while on the mode of searching. Detection range 300 km. Range for target jamming (in the front and real semisphere) 200/120 km (bomber) and 90/70 km (fighter). Number of simultaneous attacks against targets 4.

Weapons: Aircraft armament (defensive): includes a built-in six-barreled gun GSh-6-23, gun caliber 23 mm, rate of fire -8000 rounds per minute, ammunition load - 260 rounds.
