This is a modernized version of the MiG-31BSM that was developed based on the MiG-31BS to the level of the MiG-31BM.
The MiG-31BSM is equipped with a new weapons control system, radar and on-board digital computer, which allows for the detection and tracking of both air and ground/surface targets. Target detection range up to 320 km, simultaneous tracking of up to ten targets and simultaneous attack of six targets at a range of up to 280 km.

The main difference from the MiG-31BM.
- lack of a refueling boom (in-flight refueling system)
- new onboard computer was installed
- has a GPS/GLONASS satellite navigation receiver
- installation of a periscope and mirror in the pilot's cabin (for better visibility into the rear-upper hemisphere).
- new materials were used in the design of the cockpit canopy, which made it possible to remove operational limitations, including those related to dynamic heating, which allowed the fighter to fly at a speed of 3.000 km/h (M=2.83) at high altitudes for an extended period.

- the navigator's cabin is equipped with three multifunctional LCD indicators

On August 1, 2011, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation signed a contract with PJSC NAZ Sokol for the modernization of 60 MiG-31 aircraft to the MiG-31BM/BSM standard by 2019.
