Shaanxi Y-9 was created on the basis of the turboprop Y-8F-600 (analogue of An-12, with improved aerodynamics of the aircraft), in early 2000, as a replacement for the Shaanxi Y-8 (Chinese version of the Soviet An-12).
The first flight of the prototype took place on November 5, 2011. The first serial military transport aircraft Y-9 (serial number 10x5x) entered service with the Air Force of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) in 2012.
The Y-8 military transport aircraft is designed for parachuting and landing methods of airborne troops, artillery, engineering and other military equipment, for transporting troops and various cargo, as well as for transporting the wounded and sick on a unified army stretcher.
The Shaanxi Y-9 aircraft is a monoplane with a single-headed vertical tail.
The power plant of the aircraft includes four Zhuzhou (SMPMC) Wojiang-6C (FWJ-6C) turboprop engines with a takeoff power of 5.100 ehp. each with JL-4 type six-blade propellers, production in China.
