A four-engine radio intelligence / reconnaissance aircraft (ECM or EW) was developed by the Shaanxi Aircraft Company on the basis of the Y-9 transport aircraft (GaoXin or Y-9GX-11, further development of the An-12) with four Zhuzhou WJ-6C turbofan engines, with propellers are six-bladed type JL-4, with a power of 5.100 s.h.p. Each. The aircraft was developed to replace the Y-8G electronic warfare aircraft. The first flight of the prototype Y-9G was performed in 2014.

Y-9G (s/n 31017) joined the forces in July 2018 (PLAAF - Air Force of the People's Liberation Army Air Force of China), later a second aircraft (s/n 31018) followed.
