A light frontline fighter to replace the MiG-29 was in development in parallel with the MFI project (Multifunctional front-line fighter MiG-1.44). Work on the creation of the aircraft began at the OKB A.I. Mikoyan in the mid-eighties.

From the earliest known development, the light fighter was primarily developed to replace the MiG-29, and is essentially a MiG-1.44. with one engine and smaller dimensions.
The aircraft has a digital electronic flight control system. Due to cost, the majority of the systems that will equip it will be identical to those of the I-21, as mentioned above, according to the statements of the Russian Air Chief. The wingspan is 11.90 m. the length 17.90 m and the maximum take-off weight 14.000 kgf. No further details are known.

Although the MiG lost out on the competition for the fifth-generation heavy fighter, it appears to have been selected to develop the light version of a new fifth-generation fighter as a possible follow-on to the LFI/LFS program and its F-35 counterpart, under the RAK FA competition.
This fighter is called project 4.12 and according to information, at least one country, India, has expressed a strong interest in participating in the development of the aircraft.
