NATO reporting name: Halo 

A heavy single-rotor transport/troop carrier helicopter featuring a lifting capability of 20 tonnes powered by two D-136 11,400-hp engines. Its maiden flight took place on 14 December, 1977. Series production began at the Rostvertol plant in 1980.

As of 2001, about 290 aircraft were built, of which at least 16 were exported to eight countries. The Mi-26 served as a base for deriving the Mi-26T civilian transport (1995), Mi-26TM (1992) and Mi-26PK (1997) crane helicopters with an add-on crane operator cabin, Mi-26TP firefighter helicopter (1994), Mi-27 airborne command post (1988), etc.

In 1995, the Mi-26T obtained a IAC Aviaregister certificate under the FAR-29 and was redesignated as Mi-26TC.
