Series production was commenced at the KnAAPO plant (Komsomolsk-on-Amur) in 1982. Since 1986, the Su-27UB twin-seat combat trainer has been under production at the IAIA (Irkutsk). As of 2001, over 760 aircraft of various versions have been built and operated by the air forces of Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China, Vietnam, India and Ethiopia. The primary versions include the Su-27UB twin-seat combat trainer whose maiden flight was made on 7 March, 1985; Su-27SK singleseater exports version built for the Chinese and Vietnamese air forces with the maiden flight performed in 1991 (now under license production in the PRC since 1998), Su-27UBK twinseater exports version intended for the Chinese and Vietnamese air forces.
In 2001, an upgrade programme was launched for the Su-27 and Su-27UB in service with the Russian Air Force. Under the programme, the aircraft's avionics suite is going to be fitted with an advanced multifunctional computer system, a multifunctional full-colour liquid-crystal display (LCD) and the air- to- surface attack capability. Its weapons suite is to be augmented by RVV-AE air-to-air missiles and air-to-ground precision- guided weapons.
The first Su-27UBM upgrade began its flight trials in March 2001.
