NATO reporting name: Coot

Aircraft of electronic reconnaissance of electronic warfare with a side-looking-airborne radar (SLAR) station "Igla-1" and four AI-20M turboprop engines with a power of 4.250 hp each. Created on the basis of the Il-18D passenger aircraft. The first flight took place on March 21, 1968.

The complex of radar equipment "Igla-1" of the aircraft includes means of electronic and photographic reconnaissance, coupled with the navigation equipment of the aircraft. Radar "Igla-1" was placed in a large ventral pod cigor-shaped, about 8 meters long.

For aerial photography, a set of A-87P aerial cameras was installed on the aircraft, placed on both sides of the front of the fuselage.

The antennas of the "Romb" general signals intelligence system were also placed.

In the lower part of the fuselage behind the wing, antennas of the “Kvadrat-2” detailed signals intelligence station were installed. All reconnaissance equipment is served by seven operators.

IL-20 was used during the fighting in Afghanistan.
