The VK-1 (RD-45) was developed in 1949 and was based on the British Rolls-Royce Nene (Nene II) turbojet engine, featuring increased thrust. The VK-1 was a single-shaft turbojet engine equipped with a single-stage, double-sided centrifugal compressor, nine individual tubular combustion chambers arranged circumferentially around the engine axis, and a single-stage axial turbine.
The engine was developed for installation in the MiG-15bis, MiG-17, Il-28, and Tu-14, as well as a number of experimental aircraft.
Serial production of the engine continued until 1958. In total, approximately 20.000 VK-1 engines of various modifications were produced.

1. Accessory gearbox 2. Double-entry centrifugal compressor 3. 9 Combustion chambers (inside flame tube and dilution air holes) arranged around engine 4. Single-stage axial turbine (turbine stator blades) 5. Jet pipe 6. Cooling fan 7. Air casing (combustion chambers) 8. Main shaft connecting impeller and turbine 9. Propelling nozzle.
