A single-seat coaxial combat helicopter powered by two TV3-117VMA 2,200-hp engines and armed with powerful weapons suite incorporating an automatic cannon and missiles.
The maiden flight was made on 17 June, 1982. It has been series-produced at the Progress plant (Arsenyev) since 1991. As of 2001, 12 helicopters are built, with several of them being transferred to the Russian Army Aviation. The machine was fielded with the Russian Army on 28 August, 1995.
The baseline model, the Ka-50 Black Shark attack helicopter, is fitted with the Shkval-V surveillance and sighting system for daytime operations.
The baseline Ka-50 was used to derive the Ka-50Sh day-and-night single-seat attack helicopter fitted with the Shkval-V and Samsheet-50 systems (the maiden flight was made on 4 March, 1997).
Ka-50-2 Erdogan tandem-seat combat helicopter featuring an Israeli avionics suite and designed in 1999 to compete in a Turkish armed forces-held tender for a new combat helicopter, etc.
