It first took off on July 22, 1961, with R.E. Alekseev at the controls. In the autumn of 1961 he was introduced to the highest party officers and the Minister of Defense D.F. Ustinov (later the biggest supporter of this idea).

Along the wing are special "nozzles" which in turn trapped air under the wing to provide extra lift.
