NATO reporting name: Foxhound
A supersonic twin-seat interceptor featuring the Zaslon phased-array radar and powered by two D-30F6 15,500-kgf afterburner engines. Its prototype's maiden flight took place on 16 September, 1975. The aircraft has been under series production at the Sokol aircraft production plant (Nizhny Novgorod). It was fielded with the Air Defence Force's air branch in 1981 and is currently operated by the air forces of Russia and Kazakhstan.

As of 2001, over 349 aircraft of various versions have been built. The MiG-31 served as the baseline model for deriving the following versions: the MiG-31M - asubstantial upgrade of the production interceptor-fitted with an advanced fire control system and more effective longrange air-to-air missiles (its maiden flight took place on 21 December, 1985, the total of 7 aircraft was built).
Weapons control system (equipment): SBI Zaslon radar for electronic scanning with the capability of simultaneous of up to 10 targets while on the mode of searching. Detection range 300 km. Range for target jamming (in the front and real semisphere) 200/120 km (bomber) and 90/70 km (fighter). Number of simultaneous attacks against targets 4.
Weapons: Aircraft armament (defensive): includes a built-in six-barreled gun GSh-6-23, gun caliber 23 mm, rate of fire -8000 rounds per minute, ammunition load - 260 rounds.
