NATO reporting name: MiG-29K FULCRUM
The aircraft is a supersonic ship-borne single-seat multirole fighter derived from the baseline MiG-29 light tactical fighter. The first variant of the MiG-29K powered by two 9,400-kgf RD-33K turbofan engines was developed in 1988 to be deployed on the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier. It was heavily commonised with the MiG-29M multirole fighter.
The MiG-29K completed its maiden flight on 23 June 1988. A total of two MiG-29K prototypes have been built. They have logged in excess of 420 sorties, including about 100 sorties from and onto the carrier. In 1998, the MiG-29K multirole carrier-borne fighter programme was resumed for one of foreign customers.
It provides for developing an aircraft powered by RD-33 Series 3 engines and featuring a high degree of airframe commonality with the MiG-29 and MiG-29K (vintage 1988) fighters and a high degree of avionics commonality with the MiG-29SMT tactical fighter to be deployed on Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier.
