Factory designation: E-7SPS, Type 94
The letters “PFS/M” indicate:
“P” – Interceptor
“F” – Front-line
“S” – Blown flaps
“M” – Modified
The aircraft was mass-produced from 1963 to 1966 in Gorky for the Soviet Air Force. Export versions were produced from 1966 to 1968 in Moscow.
Structurally, the MiG-21PFS was a development of the MiG-21PF. To improve takeoff and landing performance, the aircraft was equipped with blown flaps and SPRD-99 auxiliary booster rockets, each providing a maximum thrust of 2.500 kgf. These boosters were mounted at a 48-degree angle relative to the aircraft plane of symmetry, generating additional thrust during takeoff.
The MiG-21PFS was designed to carry a 23 mm GSh-23 cannon pod, air-to-air guided missiles, air-to-surface weapons, and unguided rocket launchers.
Throughout its production life, the MiG-21PFS underwent continuous improvements. Combat experience confirmed its effectiveness as a fighter-interceptor. Its modernized variant, the “PFM,” was successfully employed within the North Vietnamese air defense system, where it engaged in aerial combat with American F-4 Phantom fighters.
Note: The MiG-21PFM is essentially the same aircraft under a revised designation, adopted after 1966–1967 when serial production of the E-7SPS variant ended.
