The NK-4 is a single-shaft turboprop engine, developed in the mid-1950s by the USSR to power the Il-18 and An-10 aircraft. Its design prioritizes lightweight construction, fuel efficiency, and simplicity, ensuring compatibility with the operational requirements of Soviet civilian and military aircraft at the time.

Despite its promising performance in flight tests, particularly with the Il-18, the NK-4 engine was discontinued due to an unspecified decision by the USSR's Military-Industrial Affairs Committee. This decision led to the replacement of the NK-4 by the AI-20 turboprop engine, developed by ZMKB Progress.

Design Features:

Reduction Gear: The engine utilizes a one-stage planetary reduction gear with a 14:1 reduction ratio, which translates the high-speed turbine rotation to the lower-speed shaft needed to drive the propeller.

Il-18

NK-4 engines were installed on 27 Il-18 aircraft.
