It is a multi-role helicopter based on the design of the SA.321J Super (manufactured by the Chinese Changhe Aircraft Factory).

It first flight in December 1985. The Z-8 is produced in versions for civil or military use as a transport helicopter, anti-submarine role, anti-ship, search and rescue and minesweeper.

There is also the Z-8F version with Pratt & Whitney PT6B-67A engines with a maximum power of 1.064 hp (1.448 kW).
