The MiG-21MF-derived J-7III appeared in 1984 as an all-weather interceptor incorporating a more powerplant WP-13 engine, improved fire control and radar, and increased internally-carried fuel.

A twin-barreled 23mm installed in central fuselage gun was fitted instead of the 30mm and can carry PL-2, PL-5 projectiles. The J-7IIIA version appeared in 1993 as a multi-role fighter. Fighter had almost the same equipment as the J-7III.
