In the late 1960s, Cessna began the development and modernization of Model 172 aircraft.
The aircraft began to be fitted with engines Lycoming O320E, instead of O300. The first flight of the modified version was in 1968.
In 1970 appeared the Model 172K (built 2.055 aircrafts). The craft bore larger rear-side windows and modified wing tips.
In 1972 first appeared the Model 172L (delivered 1.535 aircrafts), that differed in increased surface at the root of the vertical stabilizer airfoil, which was extended up to the cockpit, landing gear and main landing projector, which was moved from the left wing to the bonnet.
The Model 172M version quickly became popular and made a total of about 6,825 units.
In 1977 began production of the Model 172N which was equipped with engine Lycoming O-320-H2AD of 160 hp, but in 1981, due to concerns raised by the engine, versions of Model 172N, was gradually replaced by the O -320-D2J.
The Model R 172K Hawk XP ( based on version Model 172N) bore the Continental IO-360-K engine, of 195 hp.

In 1980, Cessna delivered the first version of the Model 172 RG Cutlass or Cutlass RG with retractable landing gear, equipped with engine O-320-E20 of 180 hp with 3 wing propeller. 1,191 units were made.
The edition Model 172 Q Cutlass, with fixed landing gear appeared in 1982 and a total of 391 units were made. The latest amended version of Model 172 P, equipped with engine Lycoming O320D appeared in 1985.
Based on the Model 172P, a special high-speed aircraft was developed, the Model R 172 Hawk XP equipped with engine IO360.
