Adoption by the military in: 1972 (officially adoption by the in as part of the Su-15-98M complex on January 21, 1975).
Single-seat supersonic fighter-interceptor with two turbojet engines with an afterburner R-13-300/R-13F2-300 with a thrust of 6.700 kgf each. The first flight of the prototype took place in 1970. Serial production was launched in Novosibirsk from 1971 to 1975. In total, over 450 Su-15TMs were produced.
An improved modification of the «Typhoon-M» radar - RP-26 (K-98, R-98M missiles) was installed on the aircraft. With an increased target detection range of more than 65 km, range for target jamming of 45 km, while providing the ability to track up to 1 or up to 2 targets simultaneously and simultaneously attacked against targets more than 1.
The aircraft was permanently withdrawn from active service in 1993.
Operation history:
The incident with a South Korean Boeing on April 20, 1978 in the area of the Kola Peninsula (Boeing 707-321B (HL7429) of Korean Air Lines “KAL”), flight 902 Paris-Anchorage-Seoul was shot down by a Su-15TM (which entered into the airspace of the USSR). The 1983 South Korean Boeing incident (Boeing 747-230B of Korean Air Lines “KAL”) was shot down by a Su-15TM fighter-interceptor (which entered into the airspace of the USSR). 246 passengers and 23 crew members died.
