The largest helicopter in the world ever built, with a lifting capacity of 40,000 kg, first flew in 1967. The helicopter had wing on the wing tip of which they had installed in a pair engines D-25VF type of 6,499 hp each.

The Mi-12 had a loading and unloading ramp at the rear of the fuselage. Inside the cabin it can carry loads up to 25,000 kg.

In 1969, eight world records were set in his category. In total, eight world records were set on the Mi-12 helicopter, with an absolute record lifting a load of 44.205 kg to a height of 2.255m, which has not been surpassed to date (2022).

A total of two prototypes were made, the first of which is inside the Mil factory and the second prototype is on display at the Central Museum of Air Force, Monino. In 1974 the program was finally terminated.
