The Ka-31 is an airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) helicopter derived from the Ka-27 and Ka-29 and powered by two TV3-117VMA 2,000-hp engines.
The machine carries the E-801 AEW radioelectronic suite, with the 360-deg. underbelly-mounted surveillance antenna. The helicopter flew its maiden flight in October 1987.

Its series production commenced at the Kumertau Aircraft Production Association in 1998. The helicopter also is exported.
