The R-5T was developed in 1933 as a torpedo-bomber variant of the R-5. It was a wooden biplane capable of carrying either one torpedo or one large-caliber bomb. Only 50 aircraft were built.
The R-5T remained in service until 1940, after which it was gradually replaced by more modern torpedo bombers of the DB-3 family.
