A multipurpose single-rotor helicopter powered by two TV3-117MT or TV3-117VM gas turbine engines. The maiden flight was made on 17 August, 1975. Series production has been carried out at the Kazan helicopter plant since 1977 and Ulan-Ude plant since 1991.
As of 1999, there were produced about 3,000 aircraft, of which over 800 were exported all over the globe. The primary versions are the Mi-8MT and Mi-17 multipurpose helicopters featuring a lifting capacity of 5 tonnes and powered by two TV3-117MT 1900-hp engines;
Mi-8MTV and Mi-17V, Mi-8MTV-1 and Mi-17-1V helicopters powered by TV3-117VM 2200-hp engines which retain their performances at a high altitude and in high temperature.

Mi-8MTV-3 and Mi-172, Mi-8AMT and Mi-171 helicopters featuring modified electric equipment and a range of other improvements
Mi-8MTV-5 and Mi-17MD assault troops transport fitted with a cargo ramp and an increased number of the troops carried
Mi-8AMTSh and Mi-171Sh - an Army attack helicopter armed with the Shturm or Ataka guided missiles
Mi-8MTP electronic warfare helicopters (several versions)
Mi-19 airborne command post, etc. The year 2000 witnessed the launching of an upgrade programme for the Mi-8MTV operated by the Russian Army Aviation. The machines are to be uprated through making them night-capable (the Mi-8MTKO variant featuring new avionics).
